When I try to keep deck higher when mowing the belt doesn't last very long, it's rubbing on something. When it's not running I don't see any clearance issues. When mower grass shorter do not seem to have any problems. Is this typical or am I missing something? Wondering if running a shorter belt might help, as I don't have much tension adjustment left and the idler pulleys would be in a lower position I think. I'm currently using a 5/8" x 89" belt on a 50" deck, thinking of going to 87". Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't think there's enough adjustment to use an 87" belt, might be able to get an 88" on though. With the deck on and all the way up and the tractor not running, look at the front hangers for the deck from the left side of the tractor. I think you'll find that the belt is really close to the plate that the lift "eyes" bolt to on the front of it. I've run into that before and when it's running the belt will whip and hit the plate making it wear out quick.

PTO Belt should be 5/8" x 88.5" but an 88" will JUST fit. I used an 89" on my 44C and didn't have any problems rubbing after I adjusted the mule drive.

MTD 954-3071 is 5/8" x 88.5" if you want the correct size belt for it. But they are 3x the price of a standard sized belt.

My 582 was doing that untill I got it adjusted. It was rubbing the sharp edge of the plate on the undercarriage.

Make sure your Mule drive pulleys are running dead even. They should be perfectly side by side. If 1 is back a little further the belt will rub on the undercarriage. The adjustment is on the Right pulley. Tighten or loosen untill the pulleys are running true.

If that doesn't fix it you can adjust the front hangers to drop the nose of the deck. The 44C and 50C decks mow better with there nose down a bit anyway.

I run the little 2 blade 42" deck on my 1440 rite down on the front roller. I like SHORT grass. lol It uses the same 5/8" belt mule drive as the 582 and 782.
