Well alright! I've been plugging away around the house with the ole '65 and it is high time to cut down the jungle in the new garden area. Time to clean up and activate the sickle bar cutter. I believe it's a 917.60656 but I haven't found the ID tag yet. To be fair I haven't tried super hard yet either. Now, this cutter was on the '65 when I purchased it. I took it off when I was first getting to know the tractor and what not and never put it back on. Anyways, I got it in the shop today and sprayed the whole thing down with Kroil. I came back after an hour and was able to spin the fly wheel by hand and the whole assembly moves freely!!

Now I've got a fairly good idea on how to hook this bad boy back up. I've read through the manual again just to make sure. The only thing that has me stumped at this point is a broken linkage. You can see me pointing at it in the fourth photo and it laying in what I believe is it's general direction in the third photo. I can weld it back together no sweat but my questions are what does it do and where does it connect?

Tomorrow after high school graduation I'll try to weld that part back up and get a layer rust protectant (aka paint) on it.

Hey guys,

Checking in with my sickle bar project. I have it cleaned up and mounted. I have that broken linkage welded up and ready to go as well. The only problem is I can't tell if it is bent and where does it connect on my '65 Suburban. I included some pictures.

1)The first is the end of the linkage and where I repaired the break. Is it supposed to be curved like that or straight? I suspicion the bend is what caused the breakage.

2) The second is where the linkage comes out on the left side of the '65 Suburban. Where and how does this connect? What is the purpose of the linkage. I've been scanning manuals and can't figure it out. Sorry it's sideways.

3) As an extra I also found this main hinge bold snapped when I was going through the machine. Found the size in the manual so picked up a new Grade 8 at Lowe's for it. Removed the old one with a pair of lock vise pliers because of course the hex head was the end snapped off. Greased up the whole sickle bar assembly while I was at it.

I appreciate any insight and help! Hopefully get this machine cutting this week.
