I may be posting in the wrong forum but this seemed an appropriate place to start. I just picked up an old sears Ro-To-Hoe at an auction for $10. It is in exceptional shape for its age and runs great however I tried to start it the other day and the spring inside the recoil starter broke. This is the long metal band spring the coils up between the housing and the pulley. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of finding a parts manual or part number. The engine model 143-141072, it looks like a B&S model number to me but I could me wrong. Any help would be appreciated.20191221_155756.jpg 20191214_195507.jpg 20191214_195502.jpg

The 143.141072 is the Sears number for a LAV30 Tecumseh engine.

Found this

https://parts.sears..../00013715/00001

The part numbers listed are Tecumseh numbers.

I know they did make atleast 6 different recoil starters for those engines.

Lauson/Tecumseh with early Sears model number.

143.141072 is Tecumseh generic model number LAV 30. 3hp Vertical shaft Tecumseh.   Top Right column. https://classic-engi...2/craftsman/12/

They made the LAV30 for quite a few years so having a generic model number doesn't help much.

GWest hit the nail rite on the head with that spring.

There are 226 different LAV30's listed here.

Don't see where your spring is broken.

Quite often you can use the new replacement spring as a pattern to repair the old spring but you have to remember to do it before you instal the new one.

A 143 model number means Tecumseh engine not Briggs

143 is just a Sears Designation number similar to 917 in the newer machines model numbers. Sears used to stamp there own engine model numbers but they quit doing that some time in the late 1960s if I remember correctly.

Looks like his was broken on the pulley side and someone tried to bend a new end on it.

You can do that but you have to heat it then bend it then reheat it and re-temper it. Temper it to hard and it will just snap off. Leave it to soft and it will bend and fail.

Spring steel is a bit tricky to temper correctly especially something that thin.

The rolled end on the pulley side snapped. I tried to re roll the end but couldn't get it to fit quite right and coil back into its home. I reviewed the literature in the links you guys posted and ended up ordering the spring in the ebay link Garry posted. I really appreciate the info.
