I'm putting up a retaining wall, last weekend I attempted to drill 14 post holes with hand held post hole auger that I rented. It was not able to drill deep enough through the thick clay! I don't have a tractor and post hole digger attachment, and people want to charge $240-$500 to drill the holes. What can I do?

1). Get a two man auger and a friend.
2). Use a digging bar and set of post hole diggers and go at it. Repeat 14 times.
3). Give the man $ 240, go inside and get comfortable with the recliner.

If you spend a $ 100 plus on auger rental, you're halfway there to paying someone.

what's a two man auger look like, I never seen one? I obviously would have hired someone if I knew the rental machine wouldn't cut it.

My father and I had to dig 12 holes 3' deep in hard pack clay and rock, what a bear of a job. We used a standard post hole digger and a 6' spud bar, took us quite a long time. It really sucked when those rocks where vertical, trying to get them out was horrible.

You can rent a tow-able post hole digger form your local tool rental, they have a trailer hitch then they unfold when you get them home. One man can use it.

if you are in hard clay, ask them for an extra or two shear pins.
