I have a MF10 with a Tecumseh engine in it. I am not sure it is charging right. The AMP meter shows little charge if any and when I turn the head lights on is discharges. I put a volt meter on the battery cable and from not running to running there is a 4 volts difference. Should it be more and how do I check to see if it is the Alt or rectifier?

Should have 13.2 to 14 v at the battery with it running if it is charging

And it should stay there with the lights on, especially if you throttle it up some.
Your ammeter won't read much above 0 if the battery is fully charged and you're not powering any accessories.
