We've found that as long as there are a couple of female plants we have more than enough volunteer babies around to transplant into a new row or give to friends who want to start a patch. Some years baby asparagus are our worst weeds-- they show up everywhere, and if we miss a few, by the second year the roots are pretty hard to get rid of.We try to dig up most of the female plants because of this, but it takes a while to identify them, and by then digging them is a real chore.
