Feature Tractor For September 2018
First time entering - I believe it is a 2002 Cub Cadet model 2166, shaft drive lawn tractor. I took this tractor in on trade, only because I had two more to pick up in the same city and I wanted to get rid of the one I had listed on CL. Through emails, photos and a couple phone calls we made a deal. He took my Bolens chop job throw together with deck and thrower and I took this tractor and some cash and left. It was raining lightly when I arrived so did not take the time to look things over real close. Took his word that he drove it to his back yard a couple month prior but it wasn't running now. Side covers were not on it but he said he had them, which he did.
Got the tractor in the shop and found it was locked up tight. Pulled the Kohler CH16 engine and started to get into it. Oil looked good, but that is all that was looking good. I think time escaped him and it sat outside for a couple years or more, without the air box in place and the cylinder got water in it. Rings were sealed tight as no water in the bottom. A lot of cylinder honing, new rings, replaced the cam as the ACR had flew apart, valve job, new case cover seal, plug and a quick test it fired once. Put it back in the tractor, fired it up and took it for a drive up the road a bit. Ran good so checked the deck out. Blades were the usual you find on one of these but savable, bearings sound and felt good after a good greasing. Put the deck on with a new drive belt and found the clutch was not working. Bearing was noisy also. Cut the old bearing out and pressed in a new one but still had an open on the ground side of the PTO circuit. MTD and OSHA and all their stupid safety switches, relays and what have you and could not find the problem. Simple fix, bypass it all and run a ground wire through a switch from the PTO to the neg battery. Took it out and mowed with it for about 20 min. It ran and cut good. Now I can look into the PTO problem, clean up the sheet metal and throw a can of paint at it and just maybe it will make a decent mowing machine.
