The 600 uses a Briggs & Stratton 6 HP.

You can find all the info you are asking for in the Tube Frame Service Manual.

Here's the link to it in the manuals section of the forum.

Bolens Med Tube Frame Service Manual 552875-1 - Manuals - Garden Tractor Talk - Forums

If you look at the 'stickies' at the top you will see the link to the entire manuals section. There's a lot of good information there on just about every Bolens made.

Since there were a few conflicting answers I guess I'll sumarize the correct information for you:

-The Bolens is a 600 around 1964-1965
-The transmission was swapped out at some point (not original)

The tractor should look like this:

Thanks and have a good day.
Michel

The Bolens in the picture above is another 1964-1965 Bolens 600
Looks like the engine is a replacement, should be a 6hp briggs in there
People always seem to re paint Bolens all sorts of odd colors

Hello.
Is there anybody to tell me what was its original engine.

Michel

The original engines on the Bolens 600 tractors were made by Briggs & Stratton (B&S). .....The same engines were used for 1962, 1963, 1964, & 1965.

If the tractor was a manual start (recoil starter) model, the engine was B&S 6 hp Model # 142302 Type # 0198-01.

If the tractor was an electric start (12 volt battery) model, the engine was B&S 6hp Model # 142301 Type # 0197-01.

The early 6hp engines had the B&S model numbers stamped into an aluminum plate (approx 7cm x 7cm) which was fastened (by 1 screw) to the cylinder cooling fins at the rear of the engine.

Later B&S engines had the engine numbers stamped into the side of the blower housing (flywheel cover) near the carburetor.

In your pics, the blower housing appears to have been changed, since it would have been originally painted brown (same color as the tractor). .....The entire engine & gas tank would have been brown. ......The 1962 & 1963 tractors used the gold color. ....The 1964 & 1965 tractors were brown/white.

The manual start Bolens 600 tractors were known as Bolens Model # 180. .....In 1962, they were models 180-01 & 180-02. ....In 1963, they were model 180-03. .....In 1964 & 1965, they were model 180-04.

The electric start Bolens 600 tractors were known as Bolens Model # 181. .....In 1962, they were models 181-01 & 181-02. ....In 1963, they were model 181-03. .....In 1964 & 1965, they were model 181-04.

The reason there is confusion/disagreement about the model of your tractor is because its transaxle has been replaced at some point in its life. .....The Bolens 600 did not have a locking differential, but the Bolens 800 did. .....Your tractor was definitely a Bolens 600, but your picture shows that a transaxle with a locking differential was installed.

I hope this helps you. ....It's interesting to see that Bolens tractors made it to Europe. .....Do you know if they were sold there when new, or did someone relocate from the USA, and bring a tractor with them?

It's because with all the paint scheme changes they went thru, no one could find a reliable resource for what it should have been until GTT came along. The fad of painting your Bolens with Paisleys out of confusion has come to an end thanks to you guys...
