Try turning the engine to make sure the starter is not jammed into the flywheel. If no luck pull starter and bench test.

The fact that the wire is getting hot means you are getting power to the motor. It may be jammed or for whatever reason the starter may not have enough power to turn the motor over. Assuming the motor is free to turn over then the starter may need work. You could try removing the plugs and seeing if it will spin without compression. You could easily damage the starter if it is jammed, so don't put power on it for longer than you need to. Good luck

Could the cable from the solenoid to the starter have gotten pinched, grounding out the current? That would explain the hot cable & no starter action.

startor must be shot. did dirrect power to it on and off the block to make sure there was not a short in the wiring somewhere. on the ground it will spark but not turn. tore the thing apart and realized i had no idea what the heck i was doing so i spent 30 min trying to get the thing back together but the freakn brushes kept popping out but finally got it and i am just going to go buy a new one i guess. what the heck, the thing was working fine before i tore the motor down.

I think I have a starter off a Kohler MV20 Magnum. Post a pic of yours with dimensions & I'll compare.
