My question is ... Is there a magic number with the hours on a 318 when you can start to expect some trouble? I am assuming that under 1k is pretty good.

Yes, under 1k is fine. I hear many of them get over 2k before having any issues.

I went to pick up my daughters the other day from thier friends house.

Anyway the father has a large chicken operation.

In the yard was a 317 and 318 , he uses them both with plows to clear the barns and cut all the grass.

His 318 has over 2600 hrs on it. Said that he changes the oil every 50hrs w/ filter, the hydro oil every 50 hrs w/ filter, and cleans the vent fins out beside the engine. Runs awesome.

He said a 318/317 will out push a stener 4x4 (5Kused) , and he preffers his little JD's in the barn to anything else.
