Hi I bought this tractor a while back for 80 bucks It needs wiring but that shouldn't be to hard once i figure out year and model. The engine is a 71 briggs 16hp, but the tractor doesn't have a model anywhere. I know it's a monkey wards, and i think it is made by gilson any help would be great.

:welcome: to GTTalk.

Thanks for the pics, that's a neat looking GT there. What Brand is it and how does the variable speed work on it or is it a Hydro?

For 3 yrs around 78-81 I worked building and grounds maintenence in a Factory. One of my duties was to mow 10 acres with a 16 hp Gilson.
Good Machine by the way, although I abused it I don't recall any breakdowns other than an oil change and blade sharpening. I don't even remember changing a belt.
However I think it would have been newer than your machine. It had a 16 HP Verticle shaft.
My guess would be that that's an early 70's machine. I'm pretty sure Gilson was bought out by Lawnboy, so a lawnboy dealer might have parts breakdowns?

Wasn't Lawnboy eventually bought out by TORO?

That looks like a good candidate for a restore. Welcome to GTTalk.

Early 1970s Gilson built Montgomery Wards, looks decent, but still those scare me, mine has gremlins on board...

Yes Lawnboy bought Gilson in 88 and Toro bought Lawnboy in 89. And it all started over a girl

Yeah I plan on restoring it, It is Gilson with a vary speed there is a lever on the right side of the shifter plate that moves a wedge against the upper drive pully somehow pushing it in and out for fast and slow as well as a 4 speed gear box.

That is what i thought 80 bucks and the only real problems it has is wiring, and the seat pan is rusted out.
