I had that problem with an old MTD, I went to TSC for a belt, got what I thought was a match, jumped off,

Ended up going to the local small engines guy, he recommend a different belt, but it was 44.6 or something,

I remember it was just about half an inch shorter and cost twice as much,

Glad you got it fix John.
The MF 7s & 8s have a guide that runs the length of the belt and if it is missing the same thing happens.

well I used it to work part of the garden the other day and had no issues with the belt coming off, so I'm going to say this problem is solved! :D
