Feeling the need for another tractor around the place.

Have looked at a couple Fords for sale/trade around here. Like the look of them and may try to find one as a project.....

I have no experience with Fords. Were there any models to stay away from or general problem areas I should look for?

I know this is a very general question, but just starting to look around and don't want to go down the wrong road....

Steering for slop, transmission works and is fairly quiet, if you want to now with it, be sure the deck is not destroyed , bearings are easy. The mid 70's to early 80's are very popular and a stout tractor for sure, most everything else can be fixed.

the only models i have herd anything bad about is the jacobsen made ford lgt 195 and the gilson made ford lgt14h , the jacobsen made 80 100 120 125 140 145 and 165 and the later yt series are all good tractors , but with any tractor you will want to check out the steering for skipping gears and the transaxle for bad noises on hydro drive tractors its common to hear a whine , on gear drive models a whine is common as well you just don't want a transaxle that makes a banging noise , and its always a good idea to check out the frame for any cracks or rust which is uncommon but its always a good idea to check , good luck with your future buy

Some of the pre-1976 models had the oil pan welded into the frame. That can be a hassle if the engine is bad. Definitly frame cracks on newer models, I need to pull my seat pan and fix one on the left side. Other than that, they are tough tractors.

About the only bad thing I know about a 195 is that there aren't many of them, making parts hard to come by. I wouldn't pass one up!

Russ, if you read back enough on here, you will find a few guys who raved about their 195s. I have never read any posts here that said anything about inherently bad problems with the 195. Glad yours is back in the game.

Tennblue59, I hope you find a nice Ford. Keep us posted if you do.
