my friend has a 2011 craftsman with a briggs and stratton 21hp single cylinder. He ran over some tall grass and got the deck clogged and the motor bogged but didnot stall. Now it hunts and surges any suggestions

Did he get all the grass out from underneath it?

Unless he really overheated it, bogging it down shouldn't cause surging.

Perhaps the shuddering and vibration broke some dirt loose and got into the carb?

Does it still have full power? I had a little rider that did that and it ended up being the head gasket of all things... It was the loss of power that was my only clue. I'd try the carb cleaning first (never hurts) but keep it in the back of your mind.

I cleaned the carb and it still did the samething. Then it backfired from the carb and ran fine for a minute or so. Then when I tried to give it throttle it surgged again
