Here's a thought. Go to a motorcycle scrapyard and look for a Honda goldwing 4 cyl. motor. It's water cooled and shaft drive, also some V4 water cooled Honda motors might work well.

Hi Toter
Great deal on the gator. Have fun with the re-power. Looks like Bob may have what you need.

Why not just put in a new China Honda Clone 13, 15hp single?

Nice. A six wheeler. What about trying to find an ATV engine for it. I'm not sure if they are common in your area but some of them are setup for using the variable belt drive system.

yeah there are plenty of options id love to repower with an atv motor but im thinking that is out of my league plus they are very pricey though .. prob just get it tore apart and investigate whats wrong with the motor thats on it and go from there..

Reason I ask about the shaft is a friend of mine was trying to repower an older gator, and had set up a kohler magnum engine for it, but the shaft size was wrong and getting new pulleys with the right shaft was going to be a big cost...

Why couldn't you use a lovejoy coupling?
