I just installed a belt on my 48" deck, and noticed black belt dust behind the double center pulley on the deck. Is this a sign that the belt is too tight, or that the pulley is bad?

The tractor is a 147, and the center of the spring loaded mule pulley is about 3.5" away from the front frame.

Dry rotted belts will do that.Rust or dirt in the pulley groove will cause it to do that with older belts.
It could also be a sigh of a worn bearing.Pulley could also be loose on the spindle shaft. The pulley will lean forward and cause immature belt wearing.

I would take the deck off and pop the blade belt off and check the spindle and pulley. My 127 with 42 inch deck had a similar problem. The center pulley was loose on the spindle.I took the pulley off and cleaned up the channel with a wire wheel, put it back on and tightened it up and pumped fresh grease in it.Fixed with a few minutes of tinkering and $0.00.
