Rectifier, can you test it?

just wondering, I have one tractor that the ammeter waves all over the fast enough to catch a breeze from and another that shows a discharge while driving, and no seems to want a jump, it also has died twice while moing, but will start right up gin and run fine. Any hints, ideas, or suggestion. Thanks, Frank

What kind of charging circuit do these have? Are the electronic regulators or the big box style?

Frank, you should have about 28v AC across the 2 wires coming from the stator. You should have 13-14v DC going to the battery. The tests are run at least 2500 RPM. The rectifier has to ground through the body of itself so the mounting contact has to be clean and a good ground. Run a jumpeer from the battery ground to the body if there is any doubt.

What Doug said above is very important. If your engine is rubber mounted there needs to be a good connection from the engine chassis back to the battery - terminal. Even a small amount of resistance can cause problems with the regulation.

Thanks for ll the help, makes perfect sense. obviously if the voltage isnt coming from the stator its bad, and if no voltage is going to the battery the rectifier may be bad, IF all the grounds and connections are good
