Hello everyone, recently retired from the Military and finally own a home of my own, and purchased my first lawn tractor. I found a JD 165 HYDRO, picked it up for $50 I had it running for all of 10 minutes but now all it will do is turn over. I stumbled over this web site and have been following it for a few months I like the member knowledge base here so I will be picking your minds for tech advice. As soon as I get it cleaned up I will begin restoration I will post some pics, my first question is the engine I know it is a Kawasaki 450 but, the carb has a small electrical solenoid item coming out of the carb bowl not shown in the manual, anyone know what this is? Thanks in advance

Glenn

Welcome to GTTAlk Glenn. It could be an anti dieseling solenoid. It shuts off the fuel so that the engine will not try to run on after the spark is removed. Have a look at the manual section to see if there are any manuals for the 165.

If this solenoid doesn't make a "click" that you can feel or hear when the key is turned to "On" position, then either current isn't reaching it, or the solenoid is bad. Give it a check, then get back to us.

Sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner, actually found some temp work for awhile...Ok the item we spoke about on the bottom of the carb bowl does make a clicking sound when you turn the key, so it works as advertised. Now the bad news the arm that broke off that supports the pin holding on the carb float, can't be fixed and a new one is $150.00, so I am on the search for a reconditioned one. So sadly my project is on hold for now other than cosmetics and tear down of the body and the deck.

Thanks for checking up on me.

Nothing can shoot down a good project like lack of time or lack of money.
