Hi, I just joined - this looks like a great site!

I just purchased a 316 that has been sitting in a shed for quite a few years - the owner passed and I have no history other than that.

Does not run - is a bit of a project - I need to clean all the dust off, clean the carb and flush the tank, clean the plugs, get a battery and some new front tires, and see if it will fire up!

Per the serial number it appears to be a 1984 model - any pros/cons on that model year?

Thanks! Keith.

Hi Keith,

Sounds like you have an early Onan-powered machine. They are known as the "open frame" design and it shares much with the beloved 318. Attachments from any 300 series tractor will work on it. What size deck does it have?

Hi Travis, thanks!

It has a 48" mower deck, which seems to be in great condition i.e. good paint, no rust holes.

I was looking at the specs on tractordata (TractorData.com John Deere 316 tractor information) and it says these only came with a 38", 46" or 50" deck.

I wonder if the previous owner bought a newer one?

Thanks!

Welcome to GTTalk. I'm not sure there are many differences in these tractors from year to year. The 316/318 is considered to be a very fine tractor and they are still supported by JD with many parts still available. Check the manuals section of this forum. I know there is a service manual there for these models. Good luck getting it up and running.

Great find! Sure wish someone could come up with an affordable power steering upgrade to the 300 series.

Somewhere, probably on this forum I saw photos of a 300 with an aftermarket power steering system added to it. The cylinder arrangement looked something like the power assist steering that was on my first car, a 78 Ford Granada.
