My dad is trying to help a friend get his John Deere LX172 mower running. The issue is that when either the mower deck or the transmission are engaged, the engine dies as if the ignition were shut off. I suspect a wire that is grounding somewhere, somehow.
He also says there is a wire going to the carb/air cleaner that if you don't disconnect that wire as soon as the engine starts, the motor will die.
It appears to me that it's a wiring problem but he's got no manual or wiring diagram to assist. He says he has looked for wires that may have had the insulation rubbed off and are grounding out, but can't find any problems.
Can you suggest where to start on solving this problem?
Thanks for any replies.:wave::confuse:

Welcome to GTTalk! It sounds like you may have a defective seat safety switch. The wire they are disconnecting at the motor prbably kills the spark to the engine if the safety switches are triggered. There should be switch wiring coming from under the seat. Check the switch and wiring.
The switch is designed to shut down the engine if the PTO is engaged or the transmission comes out of neutral, while nobody is in the seat.

Thanks Brian. We re-wired the safety switch and everything works as it should.
