I decided to but the Caterpillar (88 Craftsman GT18) back together today. I went to put the booster fan Austin sent me on and "bang" it hit the shroud... so I thought hmmm... So I went and got the old one out of the junk pile and found the issue.... the back part isn't as long as the original so it doesn't even reach the flywheel.... ugh... So now I need another one... Briggs Opposed Twin is good engine, just wish I could put it back together!!

If you are using a newer Plastic Vayne flywheel you need something like this.
BRIGGS & STRATTON FAN BOOSTER # 213460 OEM PART! IJE3 | eBay
The coupler is 2 inches long.

Here is one off of a slightly older 18hp twin.Should work on yours.
Briggs & Stratton Opp Twin FAN BOOSTER Grasshopper | eBay

And here is the Old points engine Briggs 16 single and 16 twin booster. It has a pulley for Starter genny for the Singles. These are slightly smaller around than the ones up top.
Simplicity 2012-H Briggs Stratton Engine Booster Fan | eBay

Here is one of the narrow booster fans.I'm guessing this one is like the one you have.
Briggs & Stratton 18HP 2Cyl Side Shaft Eng Flywheel Fan | eBay
