Best way to treat mulch to prevent termites

When I was in HS, a friends family had a greenhouse. They would treat for seeds in the topsoil by placing it on a large platform that had pipes with holes drilled in it (kinda looked like perf pipe), cover it with a tarp, then they would then pump boron gas (inert) into the pipes. This made the seeds unable to germinate. I vaguely remember them using it with mulch too, but I think his dad had the exhaust from the tractor running into it. I wonder if that was what he was doing... Never asked why tho.
