well whos to say hygard cant be an alternative. i get an infraction for suggesting a possible choice. if hygard wasnt around back when the case 400 series were made, how do you know its not a worthy substitute?

Who says?
The manufacturers oil specification Is not for a JD20C or JD20D. They designed the machine.

Hygard is hydraulic oil not motor oil. The Case, Colt, Ingersoll tractors use motor oil not hydraulic oil in their hydraulic system. All types of hydraulic oil have been tried either on purpose, by accident, or just plain ignorance. It's been proven over and over again that they don't work well in these GT's. As far as one brand over another for the motor oil in these systems, I couldn't care less about the brand as long as it is clean when it goes in and stays clean after its in there. It should get changed at 500 hrs. or annually anyway.
