I recently decided it was time to get out of the gear drive tractors by replacing my 71-110 & 74-112 with a 300 series tractor. A local mower shop has a 300 he took in on trade so I brought it home to test drive. Didn't like the severity of the vibration at startup & although it did a good job mowing (which it will only used for a backup mower), when I started uphill with it, it cut out some & smoked. Don't want to get into engine problems, so I don't want the 300!

A couple of weeks ago I found a good looking 314 on CL in southern KC, since I don't like driving through KC, I asked the seller if he would meet us in north KC. He agreed to meet us with the tractor, arrived on time with it, but it wouldn't start. He offered to fix any problem & deliver it to our house 85 miles away. Contacted him Thursday, he had it running & would call yesterday about bringing it up today. When he called, it wasn't running again! :confuse: Sounds like fuel line blockage to me, so I called him this morning & suggested he check the tank shut-off screen.

Hopefully that will fix the problem & I'll be the proud owner of a very nice 314 in a few days! ~~ grnspot

I hope it works out for you. The older 300 series tractors are a nice machine with a strong hydro and rear axle. My 314 had a lot of problems but I am now close to the end of a refit. Be sure to check the drive shaft couplers and the motor mounts. The parts are available but are a bit pricey. Also the steering / front axle can cost a bit to refurbish. Wheel bearings, rod ends and axle bushings are common wear areas.

I called him yesterday, said he hadn't worked on it this week. Can't really blame him, as it's been close to 100 degrees all week & he doesn't get off work until the hottest part of the day! He's supposed to work on it today & call me tonight. If it's ready, he'll meet me with it tomorrow, hope it works this time! Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. ~~ grnspot
