now i had another brain fart and didnt put a plug wire back on my spark plug and the engine ran on one cylinder, and it didnt blow any smoke at all. i realized this. shut the engine off put the plug wire back on the one plug and she was a commercial mosquito fogger again. any idea why one side burns oil and the other side doesnt? i was and still am thinking about repowering her with a 25 horse vtwin. but then ill have about 2500 into her, and thats kinda scary.

Chances are that one cylinder is in need of some attention (Most likely Rings)

My old 18hp briggs twin had stuck oil ring and oil scrapper ring on 1 piston and the other side was fine.

Smoked like crazy and always fouled the plug on that side.

Is the cylinder walls lightly scored on that side?If so it's a dead giveaway that the rings are stuck.
The more you run it the worse it will get.As Burnt oil deposits will crystallize over time and score the living heck out of the cylinder walls.

Sounds like you need to pull the head on that side and take a look at things. Maybe take some pics to post also.

also for repowering ive considered a small 4 cylinder military surplus engine. its opposed twin so im sure it would fit. 32 CID Engine, 4 Cylinder, Unused [244701] - $495.00 :: Colemans Military Surplus LLC - Your one-stop surplus store with Army/Navy products for hunting gear, camping gear, emergency products, and survival products now that would look really cool.

That military engine looks like a real beast! I'm sure that the V-twin will be a good replacement as well. Keep us posted on your progress.

Rings are pretty cheap. You can get Stens Chrome rings for $22.00 per cylinder. They are the same rings as the K301 12hp but you need 2 sets.
kohler k532 rings | eBay

Here is a full gasket kit.$109.99 + $5.90 shipping
New Kohler K482 K532 K582 Gasket Kit/ Set 48 755 33-S | eBay

All you really need would be an Oil Sump gasket and 2 sets of rings if the cylinder bore is within wear tolerances.

If you find a cheap supplier for those, let me know :smile1:

Isn't that always the way that it goes LOL. One of my favorite (and crappiest looking, beat up, rusty...) tractors just so happens to be the one that runs the best! Never fails to start when I turn the key! The wiring is atrocious with taped connections and butt splices everywhere.
