I inherited a pocket watch from my mother and 4 years ago took it in to a local jeweler to see about getting it working. It had a broken jewel and was hard to find a replacement for it. Wife got a call this morning that they had found parts to fix it and did we still want it fixed. Original estimate was about $2000  and they said it would only cost $700 So wife said fix it. We took it in to the jeweler when the wife wanted to have a ring made out of some diamonds she had on hand.

Last place to go for repairs on jewelry is a big name jewelry store.  Mrs. lost a stone from her mothers ring.  We went to Kay's. Wanted to know what the ring cost.  don't know as it was  gift.  She put down $700. ( Was more like $70 at it came from WalMart. )  Gal said they would send it in when they got the price they would call.  About 10 days later she got the call.  Guess what it would cost to replace one small stone?  Yep !  $700.  We picked the ring up a few days later and dropped it off at a small town jewelry store.  They replaced the stone, repaired a couple of the clasps on the other stones, cleaned the ring all for $35.  Won't ever darken a Kay's store again.

You have to remember that pocket watches were made before they knew how to build shock proof watches. Drop it once and your $700 is out the window.

That is one of the reasons for the watch fob
