What about a cheap USB Wireless adapter as an option to see if it is a network connector problem?

This works with Ubuntu out of the box on 16.04 LTS and i have used them with success on Windows and Linux.

It sounds like your NIC (Network Interface Controller) has bit the dust.

I'm guessing that it is on your motherboard, but not to worry.

You can get an addon NIC, install in and the drivers, and you should be good to go.

Here is a place to get one:

Out of those, I'd recommend this one:

I'm going to consider that. It looks like a pretty cheap way to possibly get the old pc back on the net.

I got no idea what that is or what it does. If it is to convert a non wifi computer to wifi, that won't help. No wifi in my shop.

I finally had a chance to open the old pc up and clean it. Wasn't too dirty. I did take the chance today to order the card that old buzzard recommended so we'll see if it does the trick. It looks like that pc can be updated to windows 7 too but I didn't get time yet to see how much it would cost and how difficult of a task that may be. In the mean time the laptop is doing well as a substitute.

I haven't had much time for internet with a couple of after work commitments and honey-doos on top that. Oh well I'll still try to get here when possible.
