I recently bought a 1970, John Deere 110-model, with mower deck.
I need to purchase new blades, but how do I measure the size of the deck?

The measurement is the width of cut that the deck produces. That sounds pretty straight forward, but if the deck actually mounts under the tractor at an angle, that can throw the measurement off. If the mower deck still has the model and serial information, you could check a dealer and see what they suggest. The best way to buy replacement blades when you don't know what you need is to take the old ones with you.

on a 110 should have 39 or 47 in deck. most common on a 110 is the 39 in deck
you should take one of the blades into a JD dealer to get the right one.
