Our furnace started to sound like a pinball machine last night. Shut it off, tried again and it ran when the AC needed to all day until 15 minutes ago.

Recorded a short video.

Any ideas?

That noise is definitely contactor (AKA relay) chatter. Unfortunately without a schematic, I couldn't begin to tell you where why or how.

:ditto:

I noticed a green led light flashing at the bottom. If it is like our furnace the light will flash a code which a list of codes should be on the panel and will help narrow down the area you need to look at.

Yeah it has two diagnostic lights. Found the owners manual online so time to see if it can be diagnosed!

It's working perfectly now and flashing as it should. Waiting for it to act up again...

Yep contactor. What ever is controling that contactor is being intermittent. Those are the worst to try to troubleshoot. See if you can find a schematic for that furnace and figure out what the contactor powers and what controls the contactor.

Hard to tell from the video but I'd take a look at the blower. I've had the set screw that holds the pulley on the shaft come loose and make a rattly noise like that.

Michelle: This is a long shot, not knowing where in Wisconsin you are? Are you in a metro area where the power company may be monkeying with the voltage(Brown Out). With the Heat we have been dealing with, I know Alliance is dropping voltage to some areas for intermitant service to air conditioners around Cedar Rapids,I'm with another company about 80 miles from there but read it on KCCI News(I think I read 15 minute intervals). Suposedly it assures service to all areas served based on their limited supply.
With the newer computer controlled furnaces it could baffle it's little brain?

I know from fighting one years ago it takes very little to baffle a furnaces brain.
The Tech who installed it gave me an extra board and spent many hours on the phone at all hours of the day and night with me trying to get it to work changing boards etc.. Before He finally replaced it.
Jerry told me before we was done he would certify me as a Tech. and put me to work if I wanted to change jobs?
He said I knew as much about it as he did?

That could be blower noise. If it changes frequency as the blower coasts to a stop when it's shut off, the motor bearings could be bad or the center of the blower Wheel
could be loose on the vanes. I've had 2 blower wheel centers work loose in the past 10 yrs. Let me know what U find out.

Hasn't acted up yet. Running well and blowing colder air around the house.

It's weird - I want it to act up and yet I don't!
