When did MTD first use a seat interlock switch on their garden tractors for the first time? I know it was not mandated until 1987, though some manufacturers did implement this feature years before.

What it does: if you attempt to leave your tractor with the mowing deck engaged and parking brake not set, the engine will automatically shut off.

Hmmmmmm  Osha (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) comes to mind so some time after April 28, 1971 lol.

In 1982-1983 MTD 990 got the Reverse Safety switch but still no seat switch. The 1980-83 MTD 995 does not have it listed. The 1990-1993 MTD 995 has the seat switch in the wiring diagram.  So It was somewhere between 1983-1993.

Eric,

I found out 1987 was the first year it (the seat interlock) was implemented for the 995.

So in the case of MTD, it was a gradual process... thank you!
