I have two Tecumseh HH160-170012 engines and both of them have the same problem. When cranking, I must have the throttle completely closed which makes it difficult to continue running. If I open the throttle even a little bit when cranking, the starter abruptly stops as it will not turn the engine. Have tried new battery, rebuilt starter and nothing helps. What causes this problem and how do I fix it?

If the engine is struggling to turn over have you checked your valve lash?

If the valves are out of adjustment it will make the engine turn over harder

Or a sheered or missing flywheel key. I doubt both are sheered but it is possible I guess. Maybe someone had the flywheels off and forgot to put the flywheel key back in?

Valve clearances are :

Intake valve      .005 in

Exhaust valve   .010 in
