If they're good enough to die for us in our wars, do search and rescue, lead the blind and serve the disabled in so many other ways....they also deserve our lawful protection.  A criminal who kills a police dog on duty should be charged with murder of a police officer. If a service dog is injured or killed while helping or protecting  it's master against a criminal it should be represented in court against the perpetrator just as a human would.
