Took a while, but I finally snagged a nice Simplicity built JCP. For years I had noninterest in these as I find them pretty ugly, but my interest has grown as I have accumulated a few other scarcer Simplicity products.

It was nonrunning and I arranged Uship vs chasing after it. It has turned out to be one of the nicer original JCP machines I have seen. #405. It took a little tinkering but I added back a few of the missing original parts and have it fired up and running great. The carb and shuttle transmission were each dialed in perfectly. Like all Simplicity JCPs, the black paint is pretty poor and the dash plate has lost its paint entirely. I have seen much, much worse though in the half dozen or so of these I have spotted on the web over the years.

-added rear lift
-oem gas tank straps
-oem nos fuel gauge
-reconnect headlight harness
-one new oem bulb
-new starter solenoid
-swapped out starter generator
-new fuel lines
-welch plug
-fluids

Now waiting for warmer weather to give her a good scrubbing. The photos with me and baby were taken courtesy of my 3yr old.

It looks pretty good.  I'd never known JCPenny even had offered garden tractors before joining here.

Nice looking machine. I've only seen two others and those were on the internet.

Nice looking machine. If I ever run across one of those I just might have to snag it.

Sometimes it good to have something different!  Especially if the price is right!

JcPenny also sold a GT identical to the MTD 990.  I guess they just went with the company that gave them the best deal.

Enjoy the new toy/tractor!

I've run across probably 5 different JCP models in this color scheme, and in various sizes and configurations from several manufacturers, likely all from the same year or three there in the mid 70's.  Mine is a '74 and the same as a rebadged Simplicity Baron 7013S. The MTD is probably top of the heap!  The Simplicity 7013S was their economy model, with no frills.

For some reason I like the color scheme on the JCP tractors. They always catch my eye on the rare occasion that a photo is posted.

Nice tractor.  Don't why you would have considered it ugly.

Kinda looks like it might be of the same era as the Edsel. It could grow on you. Looks like a solid tractor. Don
