As I stated in my title I was trying to get some clarification on the engine in the 1974 ss/16 tractor that I am working to restore. I recently became the owner of two ss/16's a 76 & 74. The 76 is coming along well but the 74 is still in the works. I pulled the plugs and found that they are short compared to the 76. I don't have any back story on these so it's on me to figure out.

I looked at the engine tag and after some digging online it seem's as though I have a 1977 engine in it, here is the engine tag. Can one of the guy's here tell me what I have?20180124_211909 (Medium).jpg

From what I have found online I'm thinking that it is a 18hp engine, if so what plug would you guys run in it? If it is a 16hp engine why would it have a different plug? Thanks for the help as always.

Its a BG engine according to the tag.

I have a manual I downloaded for that BG engine I can upload if needed.

The tag say that it has a BG MS/3272A engine in it? The other tractor has a BF MS/2833E engine in it. I thought that the BG was an 18hp an the BF was a 16hp. As far as being an original engine, that is the part in question. On one hand I would like the correct 16hp in it. But on the other the repower with an 18hp would not be a bad thing...lol, as I plan to work these. I have read that a great running 18 is a strong working tractor.

I saw a Manual online and downloaded it, if I was reading it correctly it's an 18hp engine?? If so then somewhere along the line someone tossed in a different power plant in it. I didn't see what plug it called for in the manual did I just miss it?

I am not sure about the HP rating or anything else. I have a BF-MS and stumbled across the BG manual, I noticed the difference so just moved along. When I saw the photo of your tag I figured I could help by offering the manual. Other then that I know nothing about the BG.

I do know they have different carbs and different displacement so I would bet they are different Hp's.

I see in the manual's that they both take the same plug H8C or equivalent. I know that the plugs that are in the 16hp or the BF engine are longer than they are supposed to be. Now I am hoping that they didn't cause any damage. Starting to get confused with all the different letters out there. lol

Well Mystery solved, Boomer got with me and let me know that I have an 18hp engine in my SS16 tractor. Now to figure out how to restore this tractor, do I badge it as a 74 SS16 or do I restore it as a 77 SS18 twin. Thanks for the replies and all the suggestions, TAHOE pointed me to the right person...thanks
