I picked this Command 18 up before Christmas as part of package deal with a Vanguard 16 that I wanted for my JD 318 repower project. Seller said same price of $30 for both so I grabbed the Command while I was there. It was on a Grasshopper mower but I forget why it was removed. When I got it home I pulled the plugs and tried to turn it by hand but did not have any luck. Now that I got the Vanguard 16 apart and pronounced dead I took a look at the Command today. A bit of disassembly yielded a couple of surprises...

Once I removed the blower housing and the flywheel, the flywheel key was broken.

With the flywheel removed and the valve covers off, I dropped a screwdriver into the spark plug hole and turned the engine over by grabbing the output side of the crank.  Both pistons move, the valves open, and the crank spins very smoothy.  I may get lucky on this one...

Hopefully, that is all that was wrong with it!  Don't forget to put new head gaskets and oil seals in it while you have it apart.  The Commands like to go through those.

Looks like you may be able to save her!

the most common items I go through for sales of these is valve gaskets/parts, oil seals and cylinder head gasket's other than that they really dont break all that often

That is good to know.  I will keep that in mind as this project unfolds.  Now the question is... If it is good, where might I put it?

I wonder if the flywheel side crank seal is bad on this one due to the large amounts of oil on that side of the block.

While you have it apart I would replace the seal.

To be on the safe side.  Better now than later.

1 out of 2 is not bad for $30!

Glad everything else seems to be in order.

I watched the Vanguard 16 pop up on CL multiple times between July and when I picked it up.  Price stayed the same but this Command was added when the ad showed up in November.  I tried to get out there before thanksgiving but ran out of time.  In the case of luck, I know this is incredible luck.  Seller told me people wanted him to drive all over the state to meet up and thought the price was too high.  The new starter on the Vanguard and parts potential made it worth the trip for me.  This Command 18 is like winning the lottery. I just wish it was easier to move around.  Beggars can't be choosers...
