I have a ride on Blastrac shotblaster with a Peerless 2500 Hydrostatic Transmission. One of the axles broke so I took the case apart to replace the axle. I put everything back together, and it works as it is supposed to except: The shift rod doesn't stay in high or low range. Low range is all the way in, high range is all the way out, and neutral right in the middle.
The problem is intermittent, but the last time it happened was after removing the tied-owns on a tilt trailer. A 3000 pound machine unloading itself off of a tilt trailer with no brake or speed control makes the heart beat a little harder and faster than usual.
I've looked at the Peerless parts breakdown for it, and it makes sense to me that the ball that is supposed to hold the shift fork in gear must have fallen out when I took it apart.
In the attached file, the ball is number 20.
My question is, do you think it will work if I just remove the set screw and drop a new ball and spring in the hole? As I said before, the thing runs as it is supposed to as long as the shift fork is held in low or high range.
