Before Christmas I picked up a Vanguard V-twin 16 on Craigslist to use as part of my 318 repower. The newer starter alone made it worth the money that the seller wanted for the two engine deal. Seller said it lost power and then was removed from Grasshopper mower but not sure what happened. I gave the cash, loaded the stash, and hit the road with a grin on my face.

Model - 303447

Type - 0454-01

Code - 9403081

1" x 3" crank

Electric start

When I got it home I popped the valve covers and the valves were moving when I turned the crank so I guessed a broken rod. Dropping a screwdriver into the combustion chamber on one side confirmed my guess.  Piston on one bank moves up and down but the other side did not.  My money was on a busted rod...

When I got it home, I noticed it had a more complete cooling shroud than the 20HP I am using in the 318 so I will clean, paint, and install them on the 20.  When I saw the ad, there are the parts I really wanted.  The starter that was used for less than one mowing season made it worth the trip.

Looks like a nice score.  Even if the engines aren't salvageable you now have plenty of cheap parts to work with.

Looking things over, I think I could easily clear a $125-150 by selling parts off of it.  I gave $30 for the pair and drove an hour to pick them up.

Wait for the next round of pics and the scoop on what I found today. :smilewink:

hTemps hit 40 outside so I grabbed some garage time. Removed the heads to get to the pistons. The one that did NOT move when you turn the crank is free in the bore. Removed the pto side of the engine to access the internals and found...

- one broken rod (no surprise)

- broken tooth on camshaft which lead me to...

- one broken camshaft (two places) with the end still stuck in the block :camera:

- lots of shrapnel in the oil pan

No doubt it lost power!  Probably also made a lot of noise that he failed to mention I guess.

I did not inquire as I wanted the parts and really did not care what I found inside.  I hoped it was something simple but this was planned to be a organ donor since I picked it up.  I feel a bit like a coroner doing an autopsy...

At this point I think I am going to keep the good parts for my 20HP and sell/scrap the rest.  Digging around eBay last I think I can easily make $150 on it.

$20 for the good piston if not damaged

$50-75 for the carb (pretty sure it is different than the 20 I have)
$10 intake manifold

$50 crank (if it is good)

$10 oil pump (Don't know if it would sell)

$10 oil filter housing mount

$20 block

$25 flywheel

My keep list

$50 ($25 per side) heads (likely will keep them)

$20 for the blower housing and related shrouds

$25 front of engine case
