Once I finish the axle seals my next project will be pulling the badly cracked steering wheel.  The steering is VERY sloppy and I see that the pinion gear is very worn and the shaft bushing must be too.  Assuming I can get the pin out of the shaft above the pinion I may pull the shaft up wheel and all. (wheel has not budged when I tried to pull it.)

Anybody know where I can get a replacement pinion gear?  How about a better wheel?

Thanks

John

I have a 1256 Bolens that the pinion and sector gear were both badly worn and it got so bad I couldn't steer it and had to replace both. The hard part was getting the sector gear out of the "cradle that it's in. The brass bushings are in steel bushings that are tack welded to the cradle, I took my grinder and ground the 2 welds that hold the steel bushings in the cradle and tapped one side out. I got a good pinion gear and sector gear with new brass bushings for inside the steel ones and put it back together and tack welded the steel bushings back in. It now has nice tight steering.

If you know a good welder, they can be welded and re-ground.
