Hey all,

Fairly new to the forum. Only have a couple posts under my belt regarding a Case 444 I almost bought. I am dead set on getting an old GT for use around the house. Well, that or a Power Trac 422, but those are way outta my price range as of now. I ran across this nice simplicity that is for sale down the street from me (it's weird this guy puts out something for sale that I was looking for every time I look for it, earlier this year I wanted to get a trailer and, poof there was a trailer for sale. Mayhaps I should be concerned about that). Anyways, It appears to be a bit over priced. I wanted to know if you guys could tell me the model and a price range for it. It seems it is over priced. I have not talked to the seller yet, so I dont know if there is any attachments with it, only the tractor is by the street.

That's a nice tractor with most of the cab on it. Does have the cat-0 3-point hitch. It would be hard for me to pay that much, but selling price does vary from areas.

Yes it does have the 3 pt. The cab is pretty much useless for me down here in FL. There isn't many cold days... and 0 snow. The thing that has me interested is I saw in my research that they made a small FEL for it which would save me so much time around hurricane season. This year the hurricane took out 7 trees in my yard and damaged 4 others that I had to cut down myself. I got the 7 trees moved to the street without any equipment, but it took so much time. When I decided to cut down the others I decided to rent a 50 ft lift and a Kubota with a FEL ( I wanted to rent a skid steere, but it was damaged by the person who rented it before me) Even though the Kubota didnt' have a Grapple, it saved SO much time vs. cutting the logs small enough for me to carry and then carrying them to the street.

That is a nice tractor but a bit of a high price for my area. It will probably be expensive to find and put a front end loader on that. Look around for a large GT like a
Power King or a Bolens Large Frame that already has a loader. I think that you will find alot of use for even a regulat garden tractor with a cart behind it. They can do alot. If you want to move long logs you can build a log cradle that will tow behind the GT. I suggest that you look for a decent GT in the $400 to $600 range. That should be a good tractor with a couple of good attachments. Check the condition carefully. There is alot of crap for sale at rediculous prices. I've picked up many running GTs for $200, put some work and parts into them and had good machines. If you look at older AC/Simplicitys check out the Zippo Vargas evaluation videos on Youtube. Good Luck, Rick

Thanks Boyscout. I agree the price is high. I am going to go back and talk to the previous guy I spoke to about the Case 444. the body was in decent condition. However, the engine needed work. As in the head was cracked and was leaking oil. I think if I can get him down under 300 I will pick that up and either fix the engine on it or get a repower kit for it. The downside with these things down here is people think they are worth a lot because they are old. not because they are in good condition. I ran across an old Ford 3000 that I wanted to get for nostalgia reasons as that is what we had on the farm growing up and it didn't run and wasn't much more than a parts tractor and the guy wanted 2500 for it. For moving the trees to the street, I looked at a couple pallet forks for the 3 pt. I can put that on the rear and as long as I cut the log to a reasonable size I can move it with that to the street. I am just tired of having to cut them down to a manageable size for me to carry them to the road side. (call me lazy) My chainsaw is a Stihl ms290 with a 20" bar and most of them have required me to make two cuts to get through the log, so they are pretty large trees. On a side note, I will not be replacing them with water oaks... They will be replaced by something much more hearty that resists insects better. Perhaps a live oak? not sure yet.

It is a model 4040. single production year machine (1st yr), with CCKA Onan, single spool hydraulics and a few other minor differences from later Powermax tractors. The ram air hood is the easiest way to identify a 4040. Later models had a flat hood.

I see probably a $1200 tractor...maybe more with the new clutch, which runs about $400. If the rear PTO is functional, that will add a couple hundred too, but even if the motor is fresh and both PTO's work, it is still kinda the underdog of the Powermax clan due to the smaller motor and limited hydraulic option.
