3rd time pulling this engine for starter issues, I set it aside after the 2nd time because of aggravation, forgot about it longer than I thought I would....  tried cleaning Bendix on original starter, didn't last long. then I mounted a new starter I had here onto it, after taking it apart to check it out because it had been sitting around for somebody else and I bought in a pile of left over parts from a golf course,  found a cracked corner off of one of the magnets, pulled out the leftover corner and figured that it would not be enough to hurt anything,,,, it was.
It must have been dropped while in storage or shipping before it got to me.

so now "too long" after that I just pulled the engine for the 3rd time to deal with this starter hopefully once and for all... I combined the end caps and Bendix from the one with the cracked magnet with the housing and armature from the original, it spins up nice while in my hand, hopefully it does so buried under all that tin now that it is back on the engine.... don't really want to buy a new one because this is a high hour machine so IDK that the engine has enough life left to justify a new starter,  and KT19s aren't exactly the easiest to come up with rebuild parts for, so I cant say at this point how long this engine will be around.
sorry for the different looking post to others that had already seen it and responded, I went to edit my most recent one and hit "Edit" on the wrong box....

If it spins fine out of the engine, but not installed . . .    How about the bendix gear to flywheel clearance?

I haven't found any info online about shimming a starter on the KT19.

I don't think there is any, but it could be a defect in machining. If the starter works okay in another engine . . .

Yeah it seems ok this time, I just tried to get away with just fixing"the" problem the 1st time, the 2nd time I knew that there was an issue but didn't think that it was a"bad enough" issue to hurt anything but it was. (The cracked magnet)
When I took the original starter apart the Bendix just crumbled.

added another either 4ga or 6ga ground cable, from frame (where I had the (-) cable hooked to off the battery, to the block..... made a difference yet again, in how it turns over.  Between that and the new Harley coil I just put on a couple of days ago, it starts up now like it never has before (since I have owned it anyways) about 2 revolutions and it's going--- without even using the choke, too even when stone cold,  though it has been in the garage which hasn't gotten below 40* in quite a while....  when I am out there working I crank it to 65 or so.... then back to 40* when I go in for the night.  have to see what it does in mid-teens outside.
