I see a solid state regulator instead of the old style electro-mechanical unit. Wonder if that is the original starter generator for that engine? It may be, possibly from an engine swap that has a different style S/G. Is it belt driven under that front cover? Interesting.......

this might help, it's in the threads (Sawdust 2-14), i seem to be liking these older MTD's as my 990 just got a little brother(blue 800) lol. Forgot to say the lower S/G grill is externally driven like the high mount, the ring gear is replaced with a pulley on the engine in question

Nice looking tractor there Scott, even has the tool box in the back. You got 3 attachments with it and the 3 point lift.

I don't think it has the right front grill on it, looks like the fuel tank is in the way to mount the S/G up high. ???

I believe it has the right fuel tank in it and should have the low mount S/G. Here is a picture of Daniels 990 that he restored.

I'm thinking the low and back S/G could be a crossover for the gear starter, it obviously would fit the later straight grill

To many if's in my last post to let it go so here's my new theory, the high mount grill is a carryover for 71 and 72, the low and back S/G would have got the stright grill but for obvious reasons the design is flawed and the mess is fixed in 73, this tractor is a correct 72 IMO and a nice score beyond the near free price

When was the first yr for the Hydro 990?

My earliest manual is 1971 14hp.

Very interesting that the 72' has 2 versions and this is all original.

I have the manual from the previous owner. It’s in rough shape but good enough for showing me how it all works. Note where the starter generator is located and note the picture shows the voltage regulator on top of the starter generator 45a72d5476eed47c7eb51e38c8958359.jpg

According to the manual, this is a Unico model number 4252-2 model number- hand written under it is “1972 model”

I looked at the 72' manual and found the same detail. I wonder how the S/G is driven under the fan cover?

If you need a PDF manual, I have it on my MS OneDrive to DL.

I'd sure say he does....I've NEVER seen a starter/generator like this before!
