I put sealed ball bearings in one of my sears spindles

They will work but they won't last nearly as long as a good tapered bearing set.

Let me look and see if I can find the seals again. I rebuilt the spindles on a Suburban 42 and 48" deck. If I remember correctly the Middle spindle had larger bearings and seals but i'll look them up again. This might take a while as they are very hard to find online. So just hang in there for a bit.

Yep I am correct. Middle spindle shaft diameter is Slightly larger.

2 outer spindle shafts are 0.750 (19.05mm) (20mm ID seal)

center spindle shaft is 0.8658-0.8664 (22mm ID seal) according to several peoples measurements.

You need 2 seals with the following dimensions for the middle spindle. 22mm x 45mm x 7mm (ID x OD x Thickness)

And 4 seals for the outer spindles with the following dimensions.  20mm x 45mm x 7mm (ID x OD x Thickness)

2 x  Inner mandrel seals here. https://www.amazon.c...ding=UTF8&psc=1

4 x  Outer mandrel Seals here.  https://www.amazon.c...mm X 7mm 4 Pack

Bearings & Races

Outer Mandrels, )you will need 2 for each mandrel, 4 in total for the deck.)

4 x  Outer Mandrel Bearing & Race, Sears Part #1554H & 1553H, use Napa part # SME 704298

4 x  Metallic Grease Seal, Sears part #881R. is no longer available

Center Mandrel, (you will need 2 for each mandrel, 2 in total for the deck.)

2 x  Center Mandrel Bearing, Sears Part #888R Timkin/National part number LM12749
2 x  Center Mandrel Race ( Cup), Sears Part #9494H, Timkin/National part number LM12711

2 x  Metallic Grease Seal, Sears part #882R is no longer available

This applies to:

Roper 42" deck Model #TT2131R
Roper 42" deck Model #TT728CR
Roper 48" deck Model #TT738CR
Sears 42" deck Model #917.253250
Sears 42" deck Model #917.253540
Sears 42" deck Model #917.553580
Sears 42" deck Model #917.253582
Sears 48" deck Model #917.253551
Sears 48" deck Model #917.253590
Sears 48" deck Model #917.253592

& Possibly Others.

Bearings & Races

Outer Mandrels, )you will need 2 for each mandrel, 4 in total for the deck.)

Outer Mandrel Bearing & Race, Sears Part #1554H & 1553H, use Napa part # SME 704298

Metallic Grease Seal, Sears part #881R. this part is available from Sears Parts Direct.

Center Mandrel, (you will need 2 for each mandrel, 2 in total for the deck.)

Center Mandrel Bearing, Sears Part #888R Use Timken Roller Bearing Part Number LM12749
Center Mandrel Race ( Cup), Sears Part #9494H, use Timken Roller Bearing part # LM12711

Metallic Grease Seal, Sears part #882R is no longer available, however it appears that part #881R can be used, but the center hole will need to be enlarged from 0.750" to 0.8658" it will then fit the shaft. ( I have not actually tried this, however using the bore diameter of the bearing, this measurement would be correct for the seal to fit over the shaft). On a complete deck overhaul, this would bring the required number of the 881R seals up to 6

Edited post look again lol.

Didn't take as long as it did the 1st time to find dimensions and seals. I have a bunch bookmarks saved for the junk I was working on, just had to dig through everything.

I can post bearing dimensions off of the Timkin part numbers if you need them. The seals were the hardest part to find dimensions for.

I had roughly $150 in bearings and seals when I did the 48" deck on the old SS14 4 or 5 years ago. But she ran super super Smooth and quiet as a mouse when it was back together. Definitely worth the money.  Looks like prices have dropped quite a bit since I redid my deck. I paid $8 + shipping for each seal.

It well worth $150 to get the Sears cutting modern mowers just can't handle the abuse.

Hi Eric

We would like details on how to use these seals and ball bearings on the suburban decks, I have restored 15 tractors and decks in the past six years and don't see how your idea would be successful, i savaged enough metal slingers to rebuild all I was working with, had a few extra spindles to rob.
