mtd 1400.jpg I just got this tractor. On the hood it says 1400 series 14 hp. Its a hydro with hi-lo rear end and 15"tires. I can't find a tag or serial number anywere. Can anybody tell me anything about it. I'am guessing in the 1960s. Thanks

That's a small pic, but appears to be a MTD 990 series. The tag was a sticker on the lower rear of the dash tower, but likely either gone or completely faded out. You can get the year real close by dating the engine. gGet the numbers off the engine shrouding to close date it. It will likely be 70's though.

:ditto:

I'm would say 70's to early 80's does it have a starter/generator or is it electric start.

Now that is a MTD 990 sold under many various names like Farm King. Unico, Dayton, White, etc etc etc

It has a 16 hp cast Briggs

.... they are tough tractors .... invented in the late 60's to compete with high wheel Case tractors

Very good for pushing and pulling. I have parts tractors if you need anything contact me

I see yours says 14 hp on the hood .... time to do some investigating. The Unico tractors had 15 hp on the hood ????

The gold one in my pics has 12 inch rims .... it was a scalled down one with skinny front rims and 42 inch deck.... maybe the 14 hp was produced to keep the sticker price down ??????

PICT0002.jpg Hi there this is my 1969 MTD model 149-860, but they called it a "twelvehundred". I have the manual from the factory that came with the tractor and the 1200 emblemis on it. This is a 12hp briggs engine with a peerless "1200" series manual 4 speed trans, non hydro. I have been researching everything I can about how MTD came up with their names for their tractors. It seems in the 60's it went along with the transaxle they put into in. But this only lasted for awhile. Then there seems to be no rime or reason from that point on for the late 60's to the late 70's. I contacted MTD to see if they had anymore information and they said no that everything changed in 1982 and pryor to that is now just a big blank to them. They are a lot of fun though, have fun with yours. Real work horses.

I have (2) 149-860 series here to fix or for parts .... but they have 16 hp Briggs. I have a friend with one sold under the name "Firestone" .... the tire company.....

These are shorter than the 990's .... I recently discovered the tiller shaft on the 149-860 series was too short for my 990's
