This engine has given me fits from the first day I picked it up. From blown head gaskets. galled piston and now the rod. Was trying to do some tilling and I hardly more than dropped the tilled that it had a weird noise and stopped running. Pulled the spark plug and no compression so I assume a broken rod. I will take the engine apart before I decide whether to rebuild or try to find another engine. It still turns the crank with no noise.

If the crank spins freely with no compression, busted rod for sure.
