18hp Vanguard twin. Missing one head, not sure which side. I put the one on block, the bolts fit both sides. Only thing seems diff is the inlet and outlet I guess. SO, thinking mine is right side head, but don't see any numbers on it. This is facing side with cover over flywheel with intake facing that way. I'm hoping 16 and 20 are same, still haven't found out yet. I see more 16 than any other size.

Was wondering what those two beads in the cam lobes are for? That just a bump up at start for compression release? They seem to be for only one side.

Short answer, yes, the weight on the cam gear is the giveaway.

Well, at Portland today and looking around for other items when see a Vertical Vanguard on ground kinda ruffish.  I'm thinking many parts are same as horizontal, so buy it for $40.  Go down same aisle a bit, see a Zero-turn with some apart Vanguard on it, but horizontal. AND, behind that on trailer another horizontal all apart in a box. It had one head loose, looked and that side no turn piston. $20 for that one, $45 for one setting on the mower, seems better.  Wasn't having luck finding any engines, then find three down one row today! Sheesh!  So now have many to play with. Those three are a 16hp models, so will be seeing what is same as the 18 I have. Think might get two engines out of the four I will have now. Happy Wrenching!
