Any tranny guy's out there? This is what I need to know. Is the Pontiac TH400 same as the Chevy TH400? I know that the bell housing is different, but what about the rest of the tranny? Any help would be more that appreciated!!!

There were some different length output shafts but the basic guts are the same.

What I'm doing is putting a 350 Pontiac in a Jeep CJ7 I've found an adapter kit that will allow me to install my existing transfer case to a Chevy Th400. I can get a adapter plate to mount the Chevy Th400 to the Pontiac engine, but I've already got a good 400 Pontiac tranny. I guess what I really need to know is, does the tail shaft bolt up the same or is the bolt patterns different?

Does that make any sense?

i believe the tailshafts are the same if they are equal length. and i agree with Doug, they are basically the same aside from bell housings and tailshaft lengths.

Thanks guy's. The adapter entails a complete tranny tare down and cost 500 bucks. I'd really hate to buy it and end up having to spend more money to buy a Chebby tranny. Think just to make sure I'm going to have to take it and sit it down next to a Chevy 400 and see how it looks.
