The external ignition coil resistor is getting extremely hot when key is in ON position.

I have new ignition coil, resistor, ignition switch and points.

What could cause this?

Thanks

It is very common for a ballast resistor to get too hot to touch when the key is on, and the points are closed.

It will be hot while the engine is running, but not as hot as when the engine is not running with the points closed.

When the points are closed, you are connecting battery voltage to ground through the points.  ....The resistor will heat up like your toaster.

Ok thanks .... Its ok to run it that way then? Should I just get a coil with an internal resistor?

It's OK to run it that way as long as the resistor is mounted where the heat will not affect anything nearby.
