As I get my ducks in a row to re-power my John Deere 318 I am making some upgrades and one of the first things to do is install an hour meter.  I have been looking around online and thought I had settled on a Bosch digital unit until this morning when I found this item on Amazon.  The link is to the Runleader website instead of Amazon:

http://www.run-leade.../11/196/202/110

As I read the description below one thing caught my attention:

Runleader is proud to present the new RL-HM005L Digital Two Line Backlight Industrial Tach/Hour meter.

It can work on most 2 or 4 stroke gas engine .It has a powerful timing system, RPM measuring system, as well as some other unique function design.

Timing System Including: accumulating total running hours TOT, recording partial running time JOB , Partial time resettable, etc.

RPM Measuring System Including: measuring current engine RPM,recording  MAX RPM,etc.

Unique Design Including: easy installed,Internal battery and external power, data stored automatically, white backlight large LCD design, etc.

In addition, the products have got CE and ROHS certification. It has a patent in China.

This thing is $50 on amazon and the Bosch hour meter I had planned to install was $30.

I am curious if anyone else has an experience with this item or do I need to be the one who makes the jump and try it??

Never heard of them.  I put a straight hour meter on as a replacement.  Looks like of information that I wouldn't really care about.  Set the top RPM with a tach once and your done.  But then I am old school.  As long as I know how many hours are on the oil I am good to go.   Go for it TravIs and let us know how it works out.

No experience with those but I'd try to get one with the old style metal mounting bracket with the studs on the meter and held on with nuts.  I bought a different hour meter that has the plastic clip on retainer shown in the second pic and it doesn't hold very long.  I ended up using a zip tie to hold the latches in place

Looking at the various type engines it will work on, apparently it won't work on a single cylinder engine???

I did not see that as I was thinking v-twin Vanguard.  I wonder if the cylinder info got swapped with the stroke info

I purchased one for $39.99 (10 more than the digital hour meter that was on the list)  this morning but shipping will take a couple weeks. I will share more when it is here.
