I was mowing my lawn today with my H16xl.  Everything was running smooth except for anytime I went down hill.  When I went down hill the oh160 engine would sputter, smoke and at times almost die.  It would then go back to normal operating when I was on flat ground or going up hill.  Any ideas?

What colour was the smoke, blue? Maybe overfilled crank case?? Or depending on the orientation of the carb maybe a slightly too high of float level that floods the carb body a bit when the tractor is pointed down hill. I don't have a HH160 but I do have a HH120 in a Massy so I am just throwing ideas out there.

I agree with cnc.  First guess would be fuel - flooding out going down hill.  Float level set a bit high?  If oil level is OK, then look at the float setting.

Like above answers float level setting but also check in tank for some possible debris covering up fuel intake hole.  The hole is at the front of the tank.

Water settles to the bottom, moves forward going down hill?  Shouldn't make it smoke though, just run crappy.

I adjusted the float and have had no other problems going up and down the hill when I tested!  Thanks for the tips!!
