Hows it going guys, I just picked up a Toro Suburban 12 with mower deck and plow for 20 bucks. It runs, and 4th gear works but none other so. Does anyone have any experience with these transmissions or garden tractors in general? I'm looking for as much information and help as i can get. Thanks,

Strat

Most transmissions, high gear doesn't go through extra reductions, like going across the cluster gear. Instead they collar over or slide lock to the input shaft. That gives the high speed and everything else is a reduction from there. Therefore, your cluster gear or "extra reduction" gears could be broken.

AWESOME!!!

That'd be about 1969 or thereabouts.

Only way to know whats wrong is to tear into it.  I bet its a simple/cheap fix.  Those trannys are pretty simple and other models of garden tractors use that same tranny so parts should be easy to find.

Best of Luck!!

If it has the creeper first gear, it's probably a Peerless 1300. I'm most familiar with them from the JD 110, 210 series.

Welcome to GTT !

Do you know the model number of your tractor?  ...There should be a tag somewhere showing the Toro numbers.

Gtractor that is a beauty! What color white did you use? just a standard one? The trans is a Peerless 2301. I hope to tear into it soon, but since I do body work that comes first. Ill try and keep this thread updated with the happenings on this little gem.

thanks everyone

These all used the 2301-A transmission except 1971 which used a 2301-B

I believe its "appliance white"
Been too many years since I painted the wheels/fenders.

The red is original and would clean up good but I never went all out on a detail job.

Appliance white, i think i actually have some of that. Anyhow, gonna start pulling the fenders off and pulling the transmission. And of course, happy Fourth of July guys and gals. Lets remember the real meaning of today!
